San Diego April 2016
I was sitting in a conference hall of 1000 delegates in San Diego. There were some excellent speakers and a really positive vibe.
I knew the information could really help my business… But something just didn’t feel right… and for a while I couldn’t work out why I wasn’t really enjoying it.
It was only by the time we got to lunch on Day 2 when I found myself on my own, forced to mingle with other delegates I’d not met, that it dawned on me:
I felt out of it because I was different. I was female, over 50, with a perceived incomparable lack of techie skills and the latest jargon compared to the young male whizz kids who made up the majority of the audience.
The more I became aware of it the more self-conscious, looked down upon, unattractive and unwanted I became. And I felt OLD.
I began to think that maybe my parents were right and I should just retire gracefully.
And the more I thought about it the more the anger and resentment built up.
I needed to make the most of this event. I had a thirst for the knowledge, the latest thinking, the most up to date learning that could take me and my business to the next level. But I couldn’t get it out of my head that the others were thinking “Such things are not for you”.
At the end I left that conference with loads of info but more importantly a fierce determination to never feel like that again.
And I didn’t want others like me to feel out of it like that ever again either.
